Government employees allowed to use computer purchase allowance to buy iPads

The government has allowed its employees to buy iPads by availing computer advances. In an office memorandum, the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance said it has received a request seeking clarification on whether iPad comes under the definition of personal computer for the purpose of granting computer advances. The department had amended the rules in October 2016 to make all government employees eligible for personal computer advance of Rs 50,000 or the actual cost of the personal computer, whichever is lower. India’s tablet market grew 68 per cent year-on-year (YoY) while 4G tablets registered a sequential growth of 74 per cent year-on-year, claims new insights from CMR’s Tablet PC Market Report for Q1 2022. The shipments of tablets with 8-inch displays constituted 26 per cent of the total shipments in the Indian market. On the other hand, tablets with 10-inch and above displays contributed 61 percent of the shipments.

Apple maintained the second position for Q1 2022 with 22 percent market share. Apple iPad 9 (Wi-Fi) had a market share of 45 percent, followed by iPad Pro 2021 (Wi-Fi) with 11 percent share in the tablet market. Apple shipments in the first quarter of 2022 registered a significant increase of 31 percent on a year-on-year basis.

Samsung was ranked third in the market leaderboard with a market share of 22 percent. Samsung launched 5G and 4G tablets in Q1 2022, including Galaxy Tab A8 WiFi + LTE, Galaxy Tab S8 WiFi + 5G, Galaxy Tab S8 Plus WiFi + 5G and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra WiFi + 5G. Samsung shipments registered a significant growth of 81 percent in the first quarter of 2022.
